Welcome! My name is Denise and I live in the lovely city of Des Moines, IA with my wonderful husband, Steve and our two great kids Juniper and Charlie.
My love for gardening stems directly from my parents and my gardening skills were honed during the 16 years I lived in Portland, OR (minus the first four years in college).
I’ve been documenting my gardens over the years for myself, but have wanted to do more. I read a lot about gardening and like to practice what I learn. I love to share that information with people I know. Lately, a few folks have suggested I blog about it to share my knowledge with more people.
I’ve had an email organic_homestead for 10 years now, pretty much since moving to Iowa. I like to garden naturally, meaning I plant and let things grow, tend to them and harvest the bounty. I definitely don’t use chemicals and I use only natural products to amend my soils, which I have found difficult at times to find. Miracle Gro is everywhere! Ugh!
If you come across my blog and enjoy gardening, please take a look around. I hope that what I share will be helpful to you. I’ve learned some great ways to garden naturally and can’t wait to get them documented.
Welcome to my little homestead in the city!
Like what you are doing.. Also love your header.. Its just great and thanks for sharing, woah you must have started pretty young..Keep up the good work …

A kindred spirit. You might enjoy poking around on the “dig” side of the runwritedig blog. I have a bunch of articles on vermicomposting that may get you thinking. And there’s a good one on people who are choosing to grow food, not lawns.
BTW, I loved my years in Portland and may one day go back. We lived in Aloha.

Thanks, Chuck. I will definitely go back to your site; it was almost midnight when I landed on your blog from searching “composting” tags. I had a worm box when I lived in Portland, but haven’t started one in Iowa thinking it’s probably just too cold in the winter. Maybe I can find some good ideas from you.
I, too, am a runner (or at least try to be), but I find it very hard to to be consistent as what little precious time I have to myself I either get to run, be in the garden or go grocery shopping.
Thanks for the follow, I look forward to reading more from you!

Hi Denise,
I visited your website earlier today and just wanted to congratulate you on a well presented, and informative website.
I have an (Aussie) website that has relevant information to your site, I am wondering if you would be interested in exchanging links allowing both of us to add significant and related resources that will be useful to our readers.
I would be interested to hear anything you can propose as well; such as guest post articles, product or business reviews, promoting up and coming events or promotions to each other’s databases etc.
Cheers,
Jem

Jem, I’m sorry I never responded to you. Life got so busy I completely dropped my blog. Perhaps you have some good tips on how to stick with your blog even when life gets so hectic?
I’m hoping now that garden season is upon me again I may get motivated to start up again.
thanks!
Denise
